For those of you who are currently looking for graduate opportunities in Retail or are interested in finding our more more about a career in Retail I’d put the following event firmly in your diary. 1st & 2nd November, online, with top brand names such as Marks & Spencer & Argos already confirmed. Leaving on a jet plane

No matter what I do I can never get away from the fact that even when I’m back home in Tooting and not here in Brunel work is never that far away. I put it down to the continual procession of planes over my house in the south west making their steady way westwards to Heathrow. Continual reminders that “Look, your work’s over here”!

I guess it’d be the same if I was a pilot at Heathrow, rather than a careers consultant. A bit out there. I mean, how many of us can genuinely consider becoming an airline pilot? If British Airways have their way, a lot more of us. They’ve launched a new scheme called the Future Pilot Programme. They aren’t quite open for applications yet but you can register your interest through their site and spend some time having a  nosey around as well.

Can it happen for you? Why not. With up to 100 positions available there’s plenty of scope.

Employer making an olympian effort to catch your attention

This morning we received a very clear message from sports manufacturers and retailers Decathlon (see the olympic connection) that they WANT YOU! The store manager of one of their London retail spaces at Surrey Quays is anxious to get the word out there that they are looking for their future department and store managers. Already a recent Brunel grad has taken the plunge and is starting later this summer.

Decathlon (part of the Oxylane’s group) are expanding in the UK with more new stores due to open before the end of the year so if you are curious about a career in (sports) retail have a look. Decathlon’s recruitment activity is an ongoing thing so it’s never too early to apply.

From my experience careers in retail are a bit of a hidden gem in the graduate job picture. Where else could you quickly be managing people, large budgets and really enhancing your own transferable skills?

Grad level jobs in the Charity sector: the Truth

I am very happy to introduce you to a guest post written by a current graduate at Barnardo’s, Zoe:

Despite the increasing numbers of graduates interested in working in the charitable sector, perhaps the biggest myth of all to over come is that of the elusive ‘graduate job’.

Apart from a handful of graduate training programmes, many charities do not specifically offer ‘graduate’ level jobs. There are however Continue reading

Companies are having difficulties filling vacancies with grads

No one believes me when I say this but it’s true. For instance at a recent Retail Sector Graduate Recruiters focus group Arcadia Group explained that too many candidates for their Merchandising roles were getting the wrong end of the stick about what the job involves. It’s not about being creative and store displays. It’s about maths skills, analysing data and forecasting. As a consequence the ‘wrong’ people were applying. Perhaps you can redress the balance. It’s worth noting that Merchandising Directors can earn up to £200k per annum. If that type of thing floats your boat.

Paid whilst being trained – in Sales

There’s been a clear increase in the last couple of years of companies entering the grad job market offering to train you and then place you in commercial organisations. FDM Academy are probably the most visible, appearing at the top of recent polls of recruiters of graduates into IT careers. Now my attention has been drawn by recruitment specialist GCS. They don’t do the placement aspect (you work for them) but they do have what they call a “training academy” into sales, the cornerstone of a recruitment business.

You can read more about it here but in a nutshell you can Continue reading

43% of Public Sector employers prepared to recruit this year

So says a recent survey by accountancy and finance recruitment specialist Hewitson Walker. Actually what was said was that 43% said they’d consider taking on new staff if the workload justified it. But I can’t help thinking back to my posting made back in October 2010 predicting that things wouldn’t be as bad as reported. Looks like I was somewhat right.

Advice from the professional experts

All courtesy of a trip back up north last weekend. This time last week I was eagerly anticipating my trip back up to Edinburgh to attend a good friend’s wedding. Flicking through the brochures on the plane (as you do) I stumbled upon the following article in the Business part of the in flight magazines.

It’s by Farah Ramzan Golant, CEO of Britain’s biggest advertising agency, AMV BBDO. Why am I alerting you to this? Well, for those amongst you looking to forge a career in advertising it’s a fascinating insight into what one of the major players thinks about the state of the advertising industry at the present moment. Excellent stuff for your own commercial awareness and a thought provoker as well.

For those with other aspirations it goes to show what Continue reading
