A gateway to UK wide grad job opportunities

Hearteningly enough a couple of recent conversations with Brunel final years has uncovered a willingness to consider jobs out of London. Heartening because these individuals may well find excellent opportunities with a shorter queue of applicants as a result. London isn’t the be all and end all. If you’ve got a similar point of view I’d highly recommend a new wiki site set up by the careers centre of St Andrews University.

Providing a gateway to job sites and resources grouped by UK region, it could be the ideal starting point for your research. Much less intimidating than sitting there in front of a blank Google/Bing search box wondering what to type in. They haven’t yet got our site listed but I may well have a word with them about that…

Shedding the island mentality

I’ve lived within these Isles for all bar 4 months of my life when my studies took me to the US. As such I’ve had quite a bit of practice of developing an island mentality where it seems strange to consider opportunities just a few miles from our shores. I’m probably missing out on a world of opportunities. In fact, I’m sure I am. Which means I’d probably never think to attend the upcoming event about graduate careers opportunities in European Union bodies. May 9th. Europa House, London. Perhaps you will.

Graduate job(s) of the week – bish, bash, Bosch

Word has reached me that Bosch are looking for two recent graduates to join them in their offices in Stowmarket. One Marketing graduate and one Electronics graduate. Both opportunities are one year fixed contracts but they may lead to more permanent offers at the end of the 12 months. The closing date for applications is November 29th and whilst a salary hasn’t been quoted it’s understood that it’ll be competitive. And they want you to start soon.

But, you know what. I think they’ll struggle to get applicants. Because it’s in Stowmarket. Which is where?

Let me fill you in. Continue reading

In such a competitive graduate job market how far would you go?

I’m not quite talking about the limits of outrageous challenges you’d be willing to undertake to secure a graduate level role (I long for the day where I get to do this at an assessment centre). I’m talking more of the Eddie Izzard attitude to distance that I watched in open mouthed awe of recently. He was willing to run half the length of the UK to achieve his goal. Are you willing to move half the length of the UK to reach yours?

Perhaps not half. We’re currently advertising Continue reading

The sky(pe)’s the limit

I’m aware Uxbridge isn’t necessarily the easiest place to get to (and get out of!). My daily journey from the depths of Tooting has taught me that. However, we live in a virtual world which means we can meet almost anywhere from almost anywhere. Using Skype for instance. If you’ve got a Skype account and ideally a web cam as well and are looking for a bit of ‘face to face’ graduate careers consultancy then let me know and we can ‘meet’ accordingly.

A fresh perspective on familiar territory

I’m always keeping an eye out for blogs that do a similar thing to my one but perhaps a little differently. Step forward Manchester University careers services offering that makes use of straight forward and relevant titles for its content, uses a blend of videos and text to get its messages across and has a nifty tab called Continue reading

Leonardo – the key to a European job adventure

My attention has just been drawn to a rather unique and exciting internship/placement program. The Leonardo Da Vinci programme of the European Union connects businesses and universities throughout Europe to offer work placements for the undergrads and grads of the Union.

In a nutshell what it offers you as a UK grad is Continue reading

If this blog disappeared? – Keeping up your commercial awareness

This is the first of a series of pre-Xmas posts empowering you to be effective in your job finding strategies, rather than relying on this blog. A series inspired by a question posted by a grad last week asking why there were less jobs of the week being posted recently (p.s. my answer was because this blog shouldn’t be your only source of job alerts!).

Part 1: Keeping up your commercial awareness Continue reading
