£30k grad internship: yes really

With so much talk about the undeniable unfairness of unpaid or very poorly paid internships I present to you the 8th wonder of the world. Not only a paid internship but one that’s £30k per annum paid. Commerzbank (yes, it had to be a financial institution) have a 12 month grad internship position in their Portfolio Restructuring Unit on offer. Closing date October 31st. Job description attached. And before the pound signs obscure your vision do actually read the job description and ask yourself a) if you’ve the skills and experience they’re looking for and b) is this actually a job you want to do? 12 months can be a long time if you’re in a job you don’t enjoy, even if the pay is good.

If I can be of any help with your application let me know: david.gilchrist@brunel.ac.uk.

Fair do’s and internships

I’m sure questions you’re continuing to ask yourselves are (question 1) “how can I stand out when it comes to answering those ‘why us’ application and interview questions?” and, still, (question 2) “are there jobs out there that I’m just not aware of?”. I may have somewhat of a solution on both counts.

October 28th sees one of the national graduate recruitment fairs taking place at ExCel in London. Remember, fairs give you the opportunity to Continue reading

Big opportunities in small businesses: part one

Last week I had a very useful conversation with one of the main people at Step. Amongst Step’s offering is Graduate Step which provides recent graduates with 2 to 3 month internship opportunities with a twist. They’re all with small businesses. I’ve long had a curiosity about why more graduates don’t apply to small companies and why more small companies aren’t employing graduates. Our conversation has inspired me to do a special week of small business related posts. Watch this space for the next one.

12 months on and happy on a grad scheme

Back in November 2009 I posted a filmed interview with a Brunel grad who’d found his way on to an internship. I’m sure the grad would be happy to admit that not all aspects of the role were exactly what he’d hoped from a graduate job. There was a certain amount of uncertainty for him amidst the positive things. Well good things do come to those who wait and do at least something constructive with their time in the intervening period.

I’ve heard recently that he’s very happily ensconced in Continue reading
