If you can get your hands on a copy of today’s Metro it could be worth it. There’s an ad in it today by The Metro itself looking for recent grads (and undergrads) to join them for two weeks (Feb 13-27) to do some real life research work. Particularly if you’ve studied media, business or psychology and have good numeracy and presentation skills. To apply or for more information email opportunities@ukmetro.co.uk. I did a bit of digging and travel in zones 1 and 2 and lunch costs are covered and there’s a promise of Amazon vouchers at the end too.

Grad job of the week: graduate trainee accountant, Hayes
If you haven’t picked up a copy of today’s Uxbridge and West Drayton Gazette you may not have seen that S W Frankson & Co are looking for a graduate trainee accountant to join their staff. Yes, that’s right. Advertised in an **actual physical paper. Apply in writing only to M Finch FCA, S W Frankson & Co., Bridge House, Staton Road, Hayes, UB3 4BX. NO AGENCIES!
**the job vacancies in my original posting on the value of keeping an eye on actual newspapers probably have been filled by now.
2,000 new jobs can’t be wrong
Found out this morning that in the brief period between September and December 2011 over two thousand new jobs were advertised through the Placement and Careers Service. Companies looking for students and grads. Must admit that the type of jobs ranged from full time and part time, undergrad placements and graduate roles, grad schemes and grad jobs. But it goes to show that in the face of continued negative media reporting, often based on unrepresentative small sample surveys, there are pockets of jobs out there in good numbers. Remember, you can sign up for vacancy alerts here.
The hidden LinkedIn job market
It must be said I haven’t been looking that hard but I’ve seen the first instance of an immediate start grad job being advertised by an individual on LinkedIn. It was posted in the London Marketing Community LinkedIn group by Dorothy Briggs (Mead) who is looking for “two bright young marketing execs with passions for social, digital and marketing metrics”. It appeared on my LinkedIn wall because someone I am linked to ‘liked’ the posting Dorothy made. It demonstrates a numer of things to me:
- The value of looking for and joining relevant groups on LinkedIn
- How making connections in LinkedIn can connect you with information indirectly. In this case through a connection I have in LinkedIn with another individual
- That jobs are advertised in this way on LinkedIn
It’s worth reminding you that LinkedIn has a specific job finding site as well.
The year is 2050 and all professions are obsolete
Bit of a provocative title right? All inspired by an event I attended recently about careers. One of the speakers illustrated just how quickly things are changing in the 21st century by describing how the life expectancy of companies has dropped from 45 years in 1955 to just 11 years now. So companies are being born and dying within 11 years. That can be extended to specific careers as well. They have obsolescence built in. That is the working world you are entering into.
This can feel threatening but where there are threats there are always opportunities. For instance if you’re a Marketing or IT grad there are jobs available now that simply didn’t exist 10 or even 5 years ago. Brand new career opportunities like Continue reading
A new “where are the grad jobs” and “finding useful people” tool
One of the joys of entering professional life are the phone calls out the blue and lengthy emails from companies trying to sell you stuff, whether that’s physical products or just services. I’m being a bit sarcastic here as it actually gets a bit wearing after a while particularly when you’re thinking whatever they’re selling is already out there or being done by someone else better.
However, it’s important not to disregard everything that comes through and once again I’ve been alerted by a company to their online tool which could be useful to you. It’s a site called Simply Hired. I like it because you can Continue reading
Employer making an olympian effort to catch your attention
This morning we received a very clear message from sports manufacturers and retailers Decathlon (see the olympic connection) that they WANT YOU! The store manager of one of their London retail spaces at Surrey Quays is anxious to get the word out there that they are looking for their future department and store managers. Already a recent Brunel grad has taken the plunge and is starting later this summer.
Decathlon (part of the Oxylane’s group) are expanding in the UK with more new stores due to open before the end of the year so if you are curious about a career in (sports) retail have a look. Decathlon’s recruitment activity is an ongoing thing so it’s never too early to apply.
From my experience careers in retail are a bit of a hidden gem in the graduate job picture. Where else could you quickly be managing people, large budgets and really enhancing your own transferable skills?
Local jobs for local people
Sounds like something straight out of Royston Vasey. But could be a potential new stone under which grad jobs lurk. It’s called www.localjobs.co.uk and although some of the relevance of the jobs it has are questionable (lots of sales jobs, only a few grad level positions) you may find the odd gem or two. It’s helpfully broken down into different UK location sites like (for those still in the West London) Slough, West London and Brent. I’d advise using the Job Sectors links on the left hand side rather than the search facility on the right as the first seemed to be m0re accurate than the second.
Watching the recruitment agencies
In 1977 Elvis Costello sang plaintively about “Watching the Detectives“. Which got me thinking, who’s watching the recruitment agencies? Because as I’ve said before they come in all shapes and sizes. Both good and bad. Up until now the only way to find out was by trying a few out. Well, I’ve found a resource that might just help in advance. It’s called Recruitment Reviews.
Unique 6 week grad internship opportunity, South Ruislip
It’s not often you get the chance to experience so many different roles in a short period of time but a company who are both local and global are offering just that. Syncoms are looking forward to receiving applications from grads on to their 6 week internship programme. You’ll experience 12 different areas of their software, e-commerce, ink and print business in that time, from account management to graphic design, afiliate marketing and more. In that time your travel expenses and lunch costs will be covered and there is every chance the opportunity could turn fully paid and permanent at the end of it.
Given the variety of different business areas that you’ll get a chance to experience it sounds like an ideal opportunity for someone still exploring the different career options available to them at this point. Read the full story here including details of how to apply. With a track record in recruiting Brunel grads (2 are currently working there) it could be what you’re looking for as well.
