Fancy swapping weather for ducks for something completely different?

Whilst I welcome the arrival of winter for the inevitable winter sports opportunities it brings there’s no doubt it’s a bit grim weather-wise at the moment. Which is why one particular organisation at yesterday’s careers fair caught my attention. Because in the beginning of the depths of a UK winter one organisation are still looking for applications to join them on an island paradise in January 2011.

What’s the deal? Well, the High Commission of the Maldives are looking for graduates to volunteer as teachers of the 6 to 18 years old local children and students. A teaching qualification of some sort is desirable but not a must have. A Bachelor’s degree or higher and solid oral and written English is. The assignment will last 11 months until November 2011.

As part of the volunteering package you’ll get a monthly allowance of US$400 and your accommodation and utility bills will be covered. The monthly amount should go a long way to helping you cover the cost of flights and insurance which you do need to pay for up front.

What’s in it for you? Asides from one heck of a change of scenery this type of thing will help you stand out from the crowd when it comes to your job searching on your return and give you 11 months to further develop your transferable skills and give you some more thinking time as well.

You can read more about it here.

To apply send a CV and cover letter to ivp@maldiveshighcommission.org - interviews will be held in the week beginning November 22nd.
