The reverse psychology of spotting job opportunities

How many of you are now considering a career start in the Public Sector? Honestly. Given what you’ve read and heard about recently. The normal human reaction is to head as fast in the other direction as possible. But stop…

…because just like graduate job hunting during economic downturns, by thinking differently from the rest of the herd you may just find yourself job hunting in a much less competitive pool. As the herd turns to the busier pools of the likes of Finance, I.T. and Retail you stop, take a second look and see some opportunities still lurking at the bottom of this one.

And I’ve checked. Graduates are still being sought for the Civil Service Fast Stream, local government’s National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP), the NHS, the Prison Service and National Offender Management Service (NOMS) graduate programme, amongst others. In any sector as more experienced people are let go cheaper and less experienced people are required to plug the gaps.

Worried about the short term job security? Ask the recruiters. They’ll be honest in their answers.
